I have come to fall in love with teaching in Catholic schools. What are YOU in love with?...

"Nothing is more practical than finding God, that is, than falling in love in a quite absolute, final way. What you are in love with, what seizes your imagination, will affect everything. It will decide what will get you out of bed in the morning, what you will do with your evenings, how you will spend your weekends, what you read, who you know, what breaks your heart, and what amazes you with joy and gratitude. Fall in love, stay in love, and it will decide everything." - Pedro Arrupe

Always Bringing A Smile

My students...oh dear, what funny things they do sometimes, especially my 7th graders...

Exhibit A: A piece of foil with my name (and picture - the spitting image!) on it. It is now hanging on my bulletin board behind my desk - my students made sure I put it there.

Exhibit B: A literal take on a Stations of the Cross title - I actually had a good laugh at this one because he did give some thought to the rest of the activity and packet, so I could let this one slide. (Does he know my irrational fear of bears, though?...Hmm...)

And sometimes, the students just get it. Take this answer by one of my 7th graders about how love can and should be everyone's vocation:

These students of mine really do bring me so much joy. I love them all so much, even when they get a little crazy or have a hard time getting started on their work or unintentionally let a joke slip out in class that causes just about everyone to erupt into laughter. :)

I did also want to note before I close that I had two ice cream incidents this past week too - one where I actually had ice cream (first photo) with my sister because it got a little warmer outside, and one (second photo below) where my PLC reminisced about the time Phil almost made us late to our deep practice during our first summer of grad school because he had stopped to get ice cream before meeting us in the car. Good times...

Let the good times roll...

Take a Break...

Run away with us for the summer -
Let's go upstate!
We can all go stay with our father...

No, Hamilton is not just on the brain - it was truly an experience and welcomed break to go see it yesterday with some of my friends.

Most of us, myself included, had seen it before, but that didn't dampen or change our spirits. It actually gets better each time. (It helped to have seats on the orchestra level this time...)

Yep, we were that close. Facial expressions were extremely clear and the emotions were real.

And it truly was a break all day for me from the craziness of grad school and teaching - following the play, my sister, her fiancee, and a few other friends joined up with us, and we enjoyed drinks, dinner, and then some games at our friends' condo.

selfie almost worked - except I cut Kim out accidentally...

And this time Patrick wasn't looking...

Ah, finally the waiter helped us out - much better!

It's quite literally impossible to just work, work, work; though, sometimes I feel like I need to. My friends definitely keep me grounded and help me enjoy some time away to breathe, laugh, and enjoy the simple pleasures of this wonderful life.

Yesterday's adventures made today a little bit more bearable, even though I've literally been working on grad school stuff since I got home from the Catholic Schools Week kick-off Mass. This week is going to be crazy - so many events and deadlines both in and out of school - but it's going to all be okay...possibly even wonderful. (Please keep our 8th graders in your prayers this week - they receive the Sacrament of Confirmation on Friday!)

Happy Catholic Schools Week!

Wait for it...

Once every so often you get lucky enough to secure tickets to a taping of "Wait Wait, Don't Tell Me!" here in Chicago. But even more amazing than getting tickets is getting tickets for a night that Paula Poundstone is on...

It was truly a great night - so many laughs! I am so grateful for the five of us who were able to attend together. I love having friends here in Chicago who are always up for an adventure!

Even when weeks are busy with the day to day and grad school, there is time for some fun. We are living proof of that.

Make sure you listen in to the show this week - you're in for a good one!

Calling all Catholic school teachers and youth ministers...

Finished a good, timely read on Saturday - Room 24 by Katie Prejean. What stuck out to me most about this book were the quotes and anecdotes by her students as well as her own thoughts about ministering (in a school setting) to teens and young adults. For almost the entirety of the book my head and heart were screaming "me too!"

Trust me, if you work with teenagers in a Catholic school or youth ministry setting, you should get your hands on this - it's poignant and hysterical at the same time. And it's a quick read so you can read a few pages here and there between grading and lesson planning...

Here are some of my favorite parts:

"To teach Jesus is to conform ourselves, and help to form others, into 'little Christs' who go out and share the Good News. People are not easily transformed by ideas and concepts alone. They are far more often transformed by other people." (p. 23)

"When we constrict ourselves to scheduled teaching on its own rather than actively living what we believe, we can become blathering drones losing sight of the greater mission." (p. 78)

"As humble evangelizers, we should be pointing not to ourselves but to Christ. This is humility in its most concentrated form. We seek not to advance ourselves but to advance the work of the Lord." (p. 108) <-- There are lots of opportunity for humility as a middle school teacher. This was a good reminder. Kids have a way of making sure you don't stay too proud of anything... (Check out the Litany of Humility, which the author explains kept popping up when she needed it the most. It's a good one.)

"Student: I'm only fourteen, Miss P. As of right now, my life plan is just to get to heaven." (p. 127)

"My mom used to say that being a teacher was the hardest job in the world, not because the pay was low or the kids were bad but because at the end of the school year you'd have to say goodbye and you never knew how they would turn out." (P. 128) <-- This quote probably hit home the most, especially as many of us teachers are preparing for graduations.

Katie Prejean also talks a lot about how her students always notice far more than she ever realizes. Similar realizations have occurred in my classroom this year too, most recently on Friday, when, upon going outside to return a student's fruit snacks that I had confiscated during class (Could he have picked a quieter packaging choice to try to sneak in?), a group of 8th grade girls stopped me and said, "I really like your outfit today. I noticed it in class and meant to tell you." Well, if that don't beat all - I tell people that you really know you've "made it" in terms of fashion when you get complimented by an 8th grade girl. (They're usually so hard to please in that department!)

All kidding aside, the book reminded me that the whole teaching about God thing is more than one person's job. I may not see the effects of anything take hold while the students remain in my care, but I have to hope and believe that somewhere down the line at least one thing we studied or learned or prayed about will sink in.

For all those who teach (especially at the middle and high school level), keep doing an amazing job! You're planting seeds - scatter them abundantly for you never know where or when they'll blossom...

P.S. Happy Mother's Day weekend to all moms, moms-to-be, and women who seem/act like moms! It was a beautiful weekend (weather-wise) for all those who were out and about brunching and celebrating. Spring has sprung in Chicago!

Because It's Friendship...

I felt like I was moving in slow motion today. And no matter what I did, I realized I had about 50 more things on my plate, including things I had to fix. On top of it all, I'm in report card mode - grades and comments were due today for review, so, needless to say, it's been a little hectic in our building these past few days.

My mind has literally been going in a thousand directions all week. And that's precisely why I needed to take a break this evening and phone a good friend. I needed to laugh, to share, to listen, and to breathe. She helped me do all these things.

Good friends do that.

Here's to friendship! God sure knew what He was doing by giving us the gift of others...
