I cannot know for certain where it will end. Nor do I really know myself...But I believe that the desire to please you does in fact please you. And I hope that I have that desire in all that I am doing. And I know that if I do this, you will lead me by the right road though I may know nothing about it. When veteran principals say that it was their hardest year ever, I realized I am very fortunate to feel like I do after 2021-2022. I truly am grateful to be where I'm at... and I was even more grateful for the summer break, as it was very much needed.

To say the Summer of 2022 will likely go down in (my) history as one of the best I've had (aside from the whole trying to hire during a teacher shortage, you know) is an accurate statement. I've traveled to places that have long been on my bucket list, listened to plenty of live music, caught up with friends, and got to spend time with my family. Each activity or trip could easily have its own post, but I'll keep it short, maybe expanding later on... (I wasn't on my game this summer - everything passed too fast!)

HERE. WE. Because Reader, guess what? The list will always be there, staring back with a growing amount of checkboxes on any given day. The emails will always be there, asking you to do something or complaining about a new policy, or asking important questions. Each of us is only human. Each of us needs boundaries. Otherwise, each of us won't make it till 2023...or possibly even to next week.

Now that we're in 2022, I hope to do a lot more of the aforementioned activities as well as bust out of my Chicago bubble to see some friends I haven't seen in awhile and *fingers crossed* to finally make it to Acadia. Reader, wish me luck.

I doubt my blogging will be regular moving forward - most days I find my brain gets to empty around 4pm, and any insight or wisdom I may have had vanishes. But, we'll see what happens.

Until next time, dear Reader, be well.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9204053170345266054.post-23838540368823050692020-12-05T16:37:00.003-06:002020-12-05T16:37:57.358-06:00A long way to go
As I went for my weekly long(er) run, I felt an urge to go past the lakefront path and to the lake itself, where I was rewarded with a beautiful view of downtown:

That's a long way to go. And it's not that it was going to be a longer run than usual...I just hadn't seen the view from there before - truthfully, it looked daunting. Nevertheless, I put one foot in front of the other and made my way south, downtown growing ever larger in my field of vision. Amazingly, I got pretty close - something that seemed not as likely as when I first stood looking at the scene captured in the picture above.

And it got me thinking. That's what 2020 has seemed like too - as we experienced the start of the pandemic in our country and more immediate cities, the end/cure/vaccine seemed so, almost impossibly, far away. But now, nine months later, we're closer to a vaccine, to "normal" than we've ever been. While patience and hope are still required, the efforts taken by everyone but most especially our healthcare professionals, fire/police, teachers/schools have not been in vain. If this were a race, it would be the time when it's most daunting and challenging to keep going...until the runner thinks of the DNF that would go next to his/her name. The last push to the finish is always the hardest, as it requires you to dig deep and really kick it into gear, giving it your all, even if you feel you have nothing left.

So, as we go into another holiday separated, at least for many of my own friends and families, from those we hold most dear, we need to hold fast to hope that, God willing, we will be together in the future. And, while it's painful now, the time with loved ones when we are able to gather in the future will not and cannot be taken for granted. Every gathering will be revealed as the gift it is.

As 2020 draws to its end, I wish you joy and peace for the new year ahead and added love for times when you are feeling lonely or disheartened. This year since March has truly sucked - and it's ok and important to acknowledge that. In fact, I think my annual Christmas letter (well, this is the musical part of my Christmas letter) sums up my experiences and feelings of this pretty well, at least to some degree. (I sometimes process my experiences in unusual ways, so I'm grateful to friends and family who were supportive in putting up with my letters each year.)

Take care everyone. And keep running the race - it's been a long one, but we have the end in sight.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9204053170345266054.post-87629321232677999692020-07-27T12:31:00.009-05:002020-07-28T10:47:17.637-05:00Have a Little Faith in Plan B
Originally, I was highly disappointed when plans for summer travel to Acadia fell through. But then my travel buddy came up with a brilliant Plan B: Isle Royale National Park.

Yes, it's in the middle of Lake Superior, which means you can't drive to it. And without ferries operating this year, the only choice was seaplane, so that's exactly what we decided to do and we went ahead and booked our travel - we'd be spending roughly 4 days camping and backpacking on the island. Plenty of new experiences would lie in store...

view of landing from seaplane

To borrow a line from one of my favorite musicals, "Come From Away," Welcome to the Rock - Rock Harbor, that is. There were plenty of hikes in and around the east side, so we were content to just give that a try.

On our first afternoon/evening there (as we got in around 3pm ET), we checked in, got our camping permit (which was free! as well as free entry to the park because we still had our annual pass from last year), and set up our tent in the Rock Island campgrounds. Then, we did a small amount of exploring on some super short hikes before settling down in our camping chairs to watch sunset over Rock Island harbor (over by the lodge, which isn't open right now).

one view from campsite as sun came up

After a long first day (as we had gotten up before 4am to start our journey to make it to the sea plane place on time), we ended up sleeping in till 8 or so on our first full day. As we were finishing up breakfast, 2 rangers stopped by to check on our camping permits and to see how we were doing. (National Park rangers are the best!) They said there was a chance of storms later in the day starting around 1pm, so we decided to get packed up and head back to Rock Harbor for our final night of camping (as we had an early seaplane flight the next morning out of Rock Harbor). We went back partly by way of Rock Harbor Trail until we got to Suzy's Cave (about the halfway point), when we switched over to the Tobin Trail (opposite side of the island). Once we claimed our camping shelter/tent site for the night at Rock Harbor, we played some card and dice games for a bit, hung our sweaty clothing out to dry, and managed to not have much rain at all other than a quick sprinkle. Later that evening we went for a walk by the harbor and then we went to the northern/NW side of the island to view sunset from the Tobin Harbor dock, where we found a family fishing. The boy (who was probably in high school, if I had to guess) caught a fish, and that was quite the excitement for all of them and very fun to watch. Even later (about 3am), we got up and walked a short distance (again, with the assistance of our headlamps) to Rock Harbor marina to look up at the stars. It was magical! (Sadly no pics of those, though.)

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkV5OCXZncWzHR63-T87m8JAydJHL75MYPYXx2fO0vr4TuZhckT_rnuTpJSOu8MMelc_QtXERzBQW_QqQHaPvgaIHoTh97JBTZquY5PJ7IR09q76kW1hyDSSYI7cprC6nDbunIqyPgzRXD/s3264/IMG_2620.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; We were the only ones scheduled on the flight so we actually got out early, and we were back to the mainland of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan by 9:30am. And then we began the long drive home, which included much rain as well as having to fill up the air in the tires to make sure the pressure light didn't stay on. Online Mass didn't seem like such a bad idea, and it certainly was more convenient (and less of a time commitment on Sundays). On the flip side, it turned out to have a lot more opportunities for distraction, as I could gaze around my apartment or out the window or even switch tabs on my computer. And the whole not receiving Jesus thing... I found myself asking, was this even attending Mass?

Don't get me wrong - we are blessed to be living at a time when technology allows for recording/broadcasting and live-streaming services. Can you imagine what we would have done 30 years ago? Sure, EWTN has been showing Sunday Masses on TV for many years, but it certainly feels more intimate and meaningful when you still have a sense of your own parish or priest celebrating on the screen. So, yes, in a sense I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to log into Facebook each Sunday and watch Faith Hub, or the ACE Mass, or my own parish Mass.

But still...

Lost.
<strike>Scared</strike>. Terrified.
Confused.

These feelings have definitely been present in both my own spiritual life as well as my role as a Catholic school leader. Without the true ritual of the Mass, I found myself making excuses for spending less time with God in prayer and centering my work less on God and more on what our human efforts could produce. And I know our human efforts are worth something, but they're not everything and we certainly can't do anything without God's help and presence.

Our world is a scary place with COVID, racism, and the upcoming election, to name a few. Thinking about going back to school in August and everything that has to be in place before then is scary too.

But now there's increasing opportunity to go to Mass again. And that honestly gives me so much hope. It's not to say that automatically this washes away all fears and worries - that would be impossible - but it makes me remember that we are a community of faith that is gathered together, physically when able but also in spirit.

Yet, there is realization that a lot of parishes lack the volunteers they need to reopen their doors, maybe because their population is mostly elderly or they are small in number. So, if you're reading this and you are able/willing (within your comfort zone), I encourage you to reach out to your parish staff or pastor and see where the greatest need is so that people can start coming back together to worship, whether that be greeters, Eucharistic ministers, lectors, sanitizers, sacristans, or other positions.
Let us work together so that our worldwide Church comes back strong and is a beacon of hope for all who are struggling in our present moment and world.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9204053170345266054.post-55570567674269830662020-04-30T09:16:00.001-05:002020-04-30T09:16:26.869-05:00Wrapping up the Poem A Day Challenge with #30It's hard to see progress with such baby steps, but when you stop and look back over the period of time you worked on XYZ, it becomes much clearer.

Today, April 30, marks the final day of my "Poem A Day" Challenge, which I started on April 1. I have compiled all of the poems and their respective audio recordings HERE. While I will be glad to take a break from poetry, it's been an interesting exercise in just letting thoughts spill out onto the paper however the Spirit moved me on a given day. I guess I'll give myself a bit of a break and then find a new creative challenge... Hmmm...

I feel like there's a bit more pressure to end on a strong poem, but the funny thing about poetry is that it speaks so differently to each individual reader; what one loves deeply may not touch another person's heart in nearly the same way or at all. Well, anyways, here is today's poem (even though it reads more like a prayer or litany); it's the final one of this collection/challenge.

For the sick and the dying...
For those struggling to make ends meet...
For postal carriers and grocery clerks...
For teachers doing what they can to help their students adjust and learn...
For all healthcare workers on the front lines...
For those without visitors, family, or someone to check in...
For priests and religious leaders who continue to minister and guide their flocks...
For those who have been laid off from their jobs...
For hope in our world in this time of darkness...

Hear our prayers, O Lord
Lift our hearts, O Lord
Give us strength, O Lord
For it is you we trust

I sit in silence
Listening for the sound of birds chirping
Outside my window
Which is open today

Sunlight sneaks in through the blinds
Bringing a sense of warmth and comfort
To my lonely living room

Flowers stand taller
Slowly and proudly blooming in the spring air
The colors are magnificent

From my vantage point
I can see dogs on their daily walks
And I can hear children laughing
As they speed down the sidewalk on their scooters

And in that moment I realize
I wish I had a scooter tooUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9204053170345266054.post-13648749401547926172020-04-27T09:31:00.000-05:002020-04-27T09:32:05.698-05:00"Beautiful Rain""Beautiful Rain"
Audio version of today's poem

There's something to be said for rain -

I know, I know...
Sunshine is so much more enjoyable,
Especially when one has the desire to be outside -

But hear me out.
Yes, it can be dreary,
And the thunder can be deafening,
Umbrellas don't always work right,
And buses splash poor pedestrians.

Rain can certainly be unpleasant;
It often puts a damper on camping trips,
And no one likes mud being tracked inside
By dogs or small children.

Still, without rain we would have no growth.
Without rain, the sun's rays wouldn't seem as bright.
Without rain, there would be no puddles.
(And there definitely would not be that iconic Gene Kelly number.)

Rain is beautiful in its own way
And when the sun comes out again,
We enjoy the day so much more.

I was reminded in a homily today
About our call
As Christians
To spread the Good News
With JOY
Such a powerful reminder
Especially in our current climate
As we strive to put Jesus first
Through prayer
And virtual Mass,
And then comes others
By reaching out to our neighbors
And staying in touch with family
And,
Finally,
Yourself -
Still important,
For we cannot serve from empty vessels,
But not more important
Than the other two
Joy -
Hard to sometimes define
But never possible to be mistaken
Do you ever find yourself pondering time,
Simply the idea of it -
As in, would it feel like today
If something else would have happened
Or if I was on vacation?

I can't help thinking about it -
Every day has the same amount of minutes
And hours
Yet,
Each
Feels
Different.
Some days drag on
For what seems like
It seems more like January
Than mid-April
More than a dusting of snow
*Disclaimer* - I wrote this poem (or, rather, these lyrics) yesterday as I was thinking about our 8th graders and the likeliness that they will experience graduation at a later time (and that they will likely miss their scheduled activities, such as their dance, field trip to downtown, etc.). I previously changed the words of Hamilton's "You'll Be Back" as a parody to enjoy during this time of the pandemic, but this one, while still from Hamilton, is meant to be more heartfelt. If my principal gives me the ok, I do plan to record it for the graduates when the time comes. Till then, you'll have to match the singing in your head along to "Dear Theodosia" -->
